Birdwatching The observation and study of
wild birds in their natural habitat. In the
UK the Royal Society for the Protection of
Birds, founded 1889, has a network of
reserves in all types of habitat (73,000
ha/180,000 acres), and is the largest
voluntary wildlife-conservation body in
Europe, with a burgeoning membership of
827,000 (1990) due to a greater awareness of
wildlife conservation. There are 116 bird
reserves in the UK. In Europe, societies such
as the Spanish Ornithological Society are
fighting to preserve sanctuaries for birdlife
such as the Coto Donana where bird watchers
can be sure of seeing rare wildlife in their
natural habitats.
